Navy Commander (Ret.) Michael D. Lumpkin (Mike) announced his candidacy for California’s 52nd Congressional District during the 2007 San Diego County Democratic Clubs Convention today.

“Our nation faces serious challenges. Now, more than ever, the people of California’s 52nd Congressional District deserve an experienced leader to represent them,” said Mike Lumpkin. “A congressional seat is too important to pass from father to son as a birthright because of name recognition, when America’s future is at stake.”

Mike Lumpkin is an American leader who served as the former Deputy Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Arabian Peninsula for Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a Navy SEAL Commander, Mike served as the Officer in Charge of the training and readiness of all West Coast SEAL Teams. Mike also served as liaison to the United States Congress during his assignment to the United States Special Operations Command Office of Legislative Affairs. Mike has a Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs and is recognized by the Department of Defense as a specialist in both the Western Hemisphere and Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict. During his 21 years of service, Mike has received more than 40 commendations and awards. Mike retired from the Navy in the summer of 2007.

“I have spent my life building consensus and accomplishing what seems impossible. Whether working to put myself through college, leading our nation’s warriors, or creating bipartisan Congressional support for our nation’s Special Operations Forces, I understand what is possible when we find common ground and work together. I defended our country with distinction for over 20 years as a Naval Officer and SEAL and would be honored to continue my service and represent the people of the 52nd District in the United States Congress.”

Mike is a lifelong, native San Diegan. He was born in Oceanside and grew up in Vista. Mike and his wife Jill have a son who is a Special Agent for California’s Department of Justice and two beautiful granddaughters.

Mike and Jill are longtime residents of Jamul. Mike has been involved in his community of Deerhorn Valley as a past President of the Deerhorn Valley Volunteer Fire Station Auxiliary and as a member of the Deerhorn Valley Volunteer Fire Station Community Service Zone Committee.
