The California Democratic Party endorsed candidates in the four San Diego County congressional districts that have contested Democratic primaries at its statewide convention in San Jose on Sunday.
But the party was unable to endorse in the most heavily contested primary in the county — the 78th Assembly District which is being vacated by Republican Shirley Horton of Bonita because of term limits.
In the 52nd Congressional District, where long-time Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter of Alpine is retiring, Democrats endorsed retired Navy Seal Mike Lumpkin over educator Vickie Butcher for the June 3 primary election.
In the 50th District held by Republican Brian Bilbray of Carlsbad, the convention chose attorney Nick Leibham over Cheryl Martin Ede, a school clinical psychologist.
Democrats also endorsed incumbent Bob Filner of Chula Vista, who is opposed in the primary by businessman Daniel Ramirez, and incumbent Susan Davis of San Diego over her primary challenger, microbiologist Mike Copass.
In the four-way 78th Assembly District primary, no candidate received the necessary 60 percent of the vote to win the endorsement.
Twenty-eight delegates to the state party convention from the 78th District voted with 15 votes going to Marty Block, board chairman of the San Diego Community College District; 10 votes for Arlie Ricasa, board member of the Sweetwater Union High School District, and 1 vote for Auday Arabo, president of the California Independent Grocers and Convenience Stores.
There were no votes for retired university professor Maxine Sherard. Two voted for no endorsement.
