Since announcing his candidacy for California’s 52nd Congressional District at the San Diego County Democratic Clubs Convention on September 8, 2007, Navy Commander (Ret.) Mike Lumpkin reported over $50,000 in campaign contributions, in his first FEC filing. Lumpkin announced his candidacy one week after his retirement from the Navy on September 1st.

“The level of trust and confidence that inspired so many people from both political parties to sacrifice their hard-earned money to elect me to Congress is as humbling as it is gratifying,” said Lumpkin. “Our nation is at a crossroads and these Americans understand that the leadership I will bring to Congress transcends partisan politics.”

Lumpkin is an experienced combat veteran who has serious concerns with the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. “Our troops are flawlessly executing a flawed strategy. Absent a clear, concise mission and effective rules of engagement, the human, financial, and global instability costs do not justify prolonging these conflicts,” he said. “Our nation and our troops deserve an effective plan.”

Lumpkin served as the former Deputy Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Arabian Peninsula for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lumpkin was also responsible for the training and readiness of all West Coast SEAL Teams and was the Special Operations liaison to the United States Congress. “I raised my hand over 21 years ago and swore to defend the Constitution of the United States. I look forward to doing just that as the representative of the people of the 52nd District.”

Lumpkin has a Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs and is recognized by the Department of Defense as a specialist in both the Western Hemisphere and Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict. During his 21 years of service in the Navy, he received more than 40 commendations and awards. Lumpkin is a lifelong, native San Diegan and longtime resident of Jamul.
